Whis is all a bit fucking much when you consider this.

Since Obama first popped up on my radar during his succesful run for the Illinois Senate Seat, in the heady anti-war days of '03-'04 I've had a lot of respect for him. Ok, his legislative record isn't amazing, nor is his experience but he provided a rhetorical flair that is generally lacking on the leftish side of the political street. Funny thing about first impressions is they do last... but not forever. After he won that Senate seat he didn't mention Iraq for another 11 months and only after he started his presidential run exploratory comittee. I'd tended to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one (young inexperienced Senator, picks his moments etc) but in light of the fact that he's looking to this guy for foreign policy expertise and is on the cusp of receiving his endorsement you really have to question the basic human decency of the Obama campaign.

Even from a strictly amoral 'let's get our man elected' point of few you have to question the reasoning. Colin Powell is thanks to his performance 5 years ago is either seen as a traitor who put his loyatly to Bush and the Neo-Cons above his loyalty to the country by pushing an invasion and occupation he'd decried as a really bad idea a decade previously or he's seen as a political embarrasment, a man lead around by the nose by Intelligence Analysis which was blatantly interfered with by higher ups in the administration he served. Either angle does not lend the sheen of 'foreign policy expert' to this prick. Contact between him and Obama can only damage Obama's standing with his base, nor will any 'liberal hawks' suddenly sit up and say "Wow, yesterday I thought Obama was a political lightweight spouting empty rhetoric and glib one liners but now Colin Powell is on board, Forget About It."

Quick Karmic Note: Should Obama win the election and give a cabinet position or any form of presidential patronage to Powell I think his emulation of JFK should end in the traditional manner. If you get my drift.

As part of a complex legal settlement I can't really go into now, I'm no longer allowed rant about current affairs down my local. Well, looks like the double-F-ers really went for it this morning. Let's not let a silly little thing like a constitutional challenge get in the way of an election. They must have all their t-shirts and stuff printed up already.

I actually had a fairly lengthy post in mind to explain what a seriously dangerous and irresponsible game the Bert is playing by dissolving a Dail while there's a constitutional challenge going on but it turns out that my big brother beat me to it. my post would have been funnier, younger and more handsome but it seems a little redundant now.

The fact that I'm highlighting something Daragh did in a positive light might indicate how important I actually think this issue is. Big tip of the hat to himself for focussing his pedantic super powers on this one.

You know, I've been trying to keep my investment of time and language skills to a minimum because I'm probably only being read by some crazy nutballs and whatever of my mates I've informed of my new little hobby (not necessarily a mutually exclusive group) but I suppose I should maybe throw out some thoughts on something I stumbled upon on the McGarr Solicitors website.

So, a legal challenge to the constitutionality of the upcoming election. Sounds intriguing. I know, Murphy and McGrath are the perennial grinches of constitutional propriety and they seem to love harshing everyone else's buzz but in this instance they do seem to be uncomfortably correct in there analysis of the situation. The last census does show a fairly sizable demographic shift in a number of constituencies (to lazy to dig out link look it up), which is really something a goverment sworn to protect and enforce the constititution of the State (it would have been so much easier for them if they'd just had to swear allegiance to the Crown) might have paid attention to.

So we could have a long shot situation whereby the Bert enters the Dail to dissolve the constitutionally created legislature but then be told by the Judiciary that he can't hold an election because the constituency boundaries are FUBARed. Now the reason this worries me is because the FF's really do seem intent on holding an election ASAP even though they're eating shit in the polls. It's almost like they know something we don't

The fact that Dick 'Dastardly' Roche is in charge of the 're-zoning' of electoral constituencies might be at the root of the problem because, all joking aside, that man is the greatest crisis manager the FF/PD's have. So great are his skills of crisis management that he has been known to leave entirely solvable problems alone for years until they become the sort of crises that have citizens of the state doubled over with the shitty squits, just so he can flex his crisis solving muscles.

For whatever reasons those clowns are pushing a quick election while putting the Krisis King in charge of getting their ducks in a row I do see a potential for a good ol' fashioned constitutional crisis. Hopefully the Civil Service might have done a bit of preventitive research into a solution and have managed to attract the attention of the Zap Brannigan's in office* but should they be remiss in their duties and shit does hit the fan I'm buying a gun and settling scores.
